We face many challenges to our survival, as individuals, and collectively - as humanity, and human life on this planet.

Some are challenges we have faced for all our existence: getting enough food, clean water, and shelter, and avoiding being killed by diseases, other creatures, or other people.

Others are more recent, such as climate change.

Most of us are now highly dependent on our complex civilisation for our survival. This can make us more resilient to challenges, but we are vulnerable to threats to the functioning of our civilisation beyond its ability to cope.
